CMDS Welcomes Anti-SLAPP Research Group

June 9, 2021

We are happy to announce that the anti-SLAPP research group Silenced by Lawsuits has joined CMDS. Founded by a multicultural group of CEU Alumni, Silenced by Lawsuits conducts research into the impact of SLAPP suits.

SLAPPs, or Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation, are vexatious suits used to erode the right of individuals and groups to participate in matters of public interest. These lawsuits are based on meritless and frivolous claims, with demands for exaggerated damages, aiming to intimidate, and to censor critical opinions.

The group aims to compare SLAPP cases in the Council of Europe region, the United States, Canada and India, filed during the timeframe of 2015-2020, against journalists, academics, environmentalists, activists and civil society organizations. The cases will be collected and organized, and used as the basis for analyses and articles to provide a better understanding of the scope of the problem.

Find out more about the project and meet Kateřina Krejčová, Raunaq Jaiswal, Feride Belma Bumin, Šejla Karić and Amparo Carrión Domenech here.
