Krisztina Rozgonyi Co-Edits Journal Issue on the EU’s Audiovisual Media Policy, Including a Piece Co-Authored by Kristina Irion
The latest issue of the Journal of Digital Media & Policy is co-edited by Krisztina Rozgonyi, a member of our Media Policy Hub, and includes a paper co-authored by our Fellow Kristina Irion.
The issue is entitled The Changing face of the EU’s Audiovisual Media Policy, and it mostly focuses on the EU’s Audiovisual Media Directive, “the centrepiece of media policy in the European Union,” Rozgonyi and co-editor Sally Broughton Micova write in their editorial. They call the AVMSD “a recognized standard on ‘good’ media regulation,” although it has limitations regarding its legislative powers as opposed to member states. The deadline for its transposition was September 2020, but most member states have been lagging behind.
The special issue presents research findings and also aims “to contribute to thinking about both the implementation of the AVMSD and the development of future policy.”
One of the studies published in the issue is co-authored by Daphne Idiz, our Fellow Kristina Irion, Jorris Ebbers and Rens Vliegenhart. It is a case study of the Netherlands, “the country of origin” for several multinational video-on-demand services from the United States, such as Netflix. The authors argue that “securing the independence of producers and ensuring VOD services are transparent with respect to performance data are essential to promoting source diversity and a sustainable value chain.”
