CoE calls for changes in Media Council and media law

December 5, 2012

The Council of Europe criticized the procedures for nomination and appointment of the president of Hungary’s Media Council, saying it does not meet European standards, according to Daniel Holtgen the spokesperson of Thorbjorn Jagland, the Council of Europe’s Secretary General.

The Council of Europe also suggested that the country’s media law be changed so that a simple majority is all that’s needed for amendments to the law – instead of the two-thirds majority currently stipulated – according to reports.
