Marta Rodríguez-Castro Co-authors Paper on the Value of Public Service Media
In a new paper for the European Journal of Communication, Azahara Cañedo, our Fellow Marta Rodríguez-Castro and Ana María López-Cepeda problematize the concept of public value of public service media in the European framework.
In the paper, the authors aim to propose a sustainable conceptualization of PSM’s public value and to allow for adaptation to the changing audiovisual context. Relying on a double qualitative analysis methodology (documentary analysis and a focus group of experts), the paper “seeks to provide a baseline conceptualisation, for both policymakers and practitioners, that improves their understanding of PSM's public value and guarantees the fulfilling of their intrinsic missions.”
The paper identifies 12 core components of PSM’s public value, including social engagement, diversity, innovation, independence, excellence and others, and elaborates on each of them.
The authors point out the difficulty of proposing a single definition and identify the challenges created by the multiplatform context in which PSM operate today.
