New Paper by Marius Dragomir on Media Capture Published by SAGE

Marius Dragomir's article "Control the money, control the media: How government uses funding to keep media in line" has been published by SAGE Journalism. As Dragomir writes in the abstract of the paper, "the media industry has been ravaged by the economic crises. Some media, mainly those covering tabloid fare and digitally savvier than others or those backed by deep-pocketed investors, are surviving or even thriving.

Where advocates of a vibrant public sphere once mobilized against the suppression and censorship of news, they now must also contend with the more complex challenge of media capture, the topic of a new book, In the Service of Power; Media Capture and the Threat to Democracy published by the Center for International Media Assistance and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Coyer's Essay Featured in Harvard's Berkman Klein Center's Collection on Harmful Speech Online

The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University is in the third year of a research, policy analysis, and network building effort devoted to the study of harmful speech. The Center has recently published a collection of essays on harmful speech online that includes perspectives on and approaches to harmful speech online from a wide range of voices within the Berkman Klein Center community. The collection features Kate Coyer's essay "State Power and Extremism in Europe: The Uneasy Relationship Between Governments and Social Media Companies".
