Marius Dragomir Participates in ELIMED-Medyascope Webinar on Media and Democratic Backsliding in Turkey

CMDS Director Marius Dragomir participated in a webinar in the ELIMED-Medyascope Media Series focusing on media and democratic backsliding in Turkey.

The discussion was moderated by Eylem Yanardagoğlu, head of the New Media department at Kadir Has University in Istanbul, and the panel included Bilge Yeşil from the City University of New York and journalist Işın Elinç.

Marius Dragomir talked about the worsening of the media freedom situation as a major element in democratic backsliding in many countries. 

Discussing why we are worse off now than before, he pointed to the phenomenon of media capture; he called it the root of the problem. He named the shrinking space for independent journalism as its most dramatic consequence and explained its logic that makes it more impactful than earlier tendencies against media freedom. 

He also discussed the CMDS study on the state of state media.
