Hate speech: role of new media in the prevention of mass atrocities

Date: 7 November 2012, 14:00 - 19:00
Location: Central European University, Monument Building, Popper Room

Media can play a key role in advocating respect for human rights, preventing violence, building trust and promoting reconciliation. But they can also fuel tensions and disseminate hatred.

The Budapest Centre for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities and the CEU are organizing a Roundtable to discuss contemporary challenges in the field of media, in particular “new media”, where academics and policy makers can discuss and explore the best ways and possibilities of cooperation to prevent genocide and mass atrocities.

CMCS Research Fellow Peter Molnar, who also played a role in organizing the event, is one of the panelists in a session on the "Role of the new media in the prevention of mass atrocities, peace-building and reconciliation", at 2:30 PM.

The roundtable, which is opened by John Shattuck, President of CEU, Attila Zimonyi, Director General of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Gyorgy Tatar, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities, also features a panel discussion on "Best practices in preventing or countering public incitement and hate speech in the context of the prevention of mass atrocities", with Andrew Stroehlein, Director of Communication of the International Crisis Group, Bernard Rorke, Director of Research at the Open Society Foundations, and others.

The Roundtable serves as a pre-event to the Fifth Budapest Human Rights Forum that will take place on 8-9 November at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Hungary.
