Kate Coyer was Keynote Speaker at ECREA conference

The Radio Research Section of ECREA held its latest conference at the Getafe campus of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain), from 28-30 October 2015. The theme was Radio: Diversity, Innovation & Policies. The challenges presented by the digitalization and convergence process have made the radio medium move into a new scenario in which it has been redefining its role.

Kristina Irion's op-ed on Cloud Services after Snowden

CMDS team member, Kristina Irion has authored an op-ed for the Internet Policy Review on cloud services made in Europe after Snowden and Schrems. She writes that "the geolocation of server farms - where data is stored and computing is performed – has evolved into an important attribute of cloud computing. By now, clients and providers are increasingly conscious of the actual whereabouts of cloud services. As a standalone fact this sounds counter-intuitive since cloud technology is location-independent and distance should not matter anymore.

CMDS Fellow and UN Special Rapporteur, Miklos Haraszti reports on media freedom in Belarus

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Belarus, CMDS fellow Miklós Haraszti, commended that protests against the perceived flaws of the presidential election in the country were not met with violence as in previous cases, but regretted that no progress was made in serving the Belarusians’ right to free and fair election.

As refugees began arriving  into Budapest in greater and greater numbers in early September, CMDS Director of the Civil Society and Technology Project Kate Coyer was struck by the large number of people searching for wifi and places to charge their smartphones. “I thought there must be something we could do that was fast, affordable and flexible,” Coyer explained. “As a researcher, I’m also interested in how we can operationalize this spontaneous, grassroots initiative to continue providing services during a rapidly changing situation and connect with others in the region to build a network of support.”

CMDS is seeking to appoint a Director who will further develop the Center's vision and profile and extend its network and scope of activities. The Director will lead the Center, working to improve ways in which the Center contributes to the life of SPP and CEU, strengthening ties and creating opportunities for collaboration. The ideal candidate will bring fundraising and project development experience to the extensive portfolio of the Center and be committed to advancing the mission of the Center, SPP, and CEU.
