POSTPONED: Europe and the Global Information Society Revisited: Cyber Security in Europe
UPDATE, 17 April: Event postponed!
We are sorry to inform you that the public event Europe and the Global Information Society: Cyber Security in Europe has been postponed until a later, to be specified date.
The public event was part of a two-day strategic workshop on cyber security, with confirmed participants from across Europe and the US. Unfortunately, due to the significant number of flights that were cancelled once volcanic ash filled the sky over Europe, and the uncertainty about how long Hungarian airspace would remain closed, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone the whole workshop until a date in May or June.
This means that the public event, too, could no longer take place on Monday. We hope to soon be able to inform you about a new event on the same subject, once the workshop has been rescheduled.

Much has changed since European Commissioner Bangemann released his report on "Europe and the Global Information Society (GIS)" in 1994. Not only has the so-called "GIS" been traded with the "Digital Agenda", the former utopian narrative that surrounded the broader adoption of networked technologies has been replaced with one of caution, especially as it relates to the daily attacks on Europe’s basic information infrastructure. In his talk, Andrea Servida, Deputy Head at the Information Society Directorate General (European Commission) will introduce the key pillars of their Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIIP) plan within the context of the broader European Union’s Digital Agenda. In addition, he will give the audience insight in whether cyber security will be addressed differently within the EU following the adoption of the Lisbon Treaty.
Presentation by: Andrea Servida (Deputy Head of the Unit "Internet; Network and Information Security", Information Society and Media Directorate-General, European Commission)
Moderator: Stefaan Verhulst (Senior Research Fellow, CGCS and CMCS and Chief of Research, Markle Foundation, New York)
Introduction: Nick Sitter (Head of Department, Department of Public Policy, CEU)
Responses by:
- Kristina Irion (Assistant Professor, Public Policy Department, CEU and Research Director for Public Policy, CMCS, CEU)
- Herbert Burker (President, Research Centre for Information Law, University of St. Gallen)
The event is part of an ESF Strategic Workshop the CMCS is hosting called "Europe and the Global Information Society Revisited: Developing a Network of Scholars and Agenda for Social Science Research on Cyber Security".
Andrea Servida joined the European Commission in 1993 and since January 2006 he is Deputy Head of the Unit "Internet; Network and Information Security" in the Information Society and Media Directorate-General.
