RightsCon, “the world’s leading summit for human rights in the digital age,” held 6-10 June, will feature several speakers from CMDS’ orbit. Here is a list of the sessions where you can find them.

Investing in facts: how the business community can support a healthy info-sphere6 June, 7:15 PM CET

In this panel, CMDS Director Marius Dragomir and our Fellow John Masuku will discuss how the business community can support a healthy info-sphere. They will present the findings of a research, conducted in 61 countries that aimed to identify and promote ethical models of business engagement to combat disinformation and support independent media. Other panelists include Ioana Avadani, President/CEE Researcher, Centre for Independent Journalism, Luis Miguel Carriedo, Columnist/Latin America Researcher, La Lista/ Zócalo Magazine and Bouziane Zaid, Associate Professor, University of Sharjah.

 

Acting local: the responsible use and design of AI governance at the subnational level6 June 8:30 PM CET

CMDS Advisory Board Member Stefaan G. Verhulst will give a lightning talk on the Governance Lab’s AI localism project. He will discuss the responsible use and design of AI governance at the subnational level.

 

Beyond content moderation: ensuring digital platform transparency measures address global needs9 June 3:30 PM CET

Our Fellow Courtney Radsch will facilitate the discussion in a community lab, an interactive debate with participants on how to ensure that digital platform transparency measures address global needs. The other facilitators include Heidi Tworek, Canada Research Chair and Associate Professor, University of British Columbia, Erin Saltman, Director of Programming, GIFCT, Luca Belli, Professor, FGV Rio de Janeiro Law School (DIREITO RIO) and Jhalak Kakkar, Executive Director, Centre for Communication Governance, National Law University Delhi.

 

Frenemies: reinventing the Big Tech versus journalism dynamic, 9 June 4:45 PM CET

Courtney Radsch will facilitate another community lab discussion, this time on the Big Tech vs journalism dynamic. The session will examine initiatives to build trust in reliable news sources. It will also explore how to leverage the properties of the technologies and platforms in which journalism is embedded. The other facilitator in this lab is Mira Milosevic, Executive Director, Global Forum for Media Development.

 

From tracking cyber incidents to tracking the harm they cause, 10 June 3:15 PM CET

Our Fellow Roxana Radu will be one of the facilitators in a discussion on moving the focus from tracking cyber incidents to tracking the harm they cause. The session aims to test out and receive feedback on a methodology designed to measure the impact and harm caused by cyberattacks and on how measurement of harm can help advocacy and policy initiatives. The other facilitators are Klara Jordan, Chief Public Policy Officer, CyberPeace Institute and Emma Raffray, Senior Cyber Data Analyst, CyberPeace Institute.
