Francesca Fanucci Represents Conference of INGOs in CoE Committee on Artificial Intelligence

April 5, 2022

We are happy to share that our Fellow Francesca Fanucci is on the new Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAI) at the Council of Europe.

In the new committee, she represents the Conference of International NGOs at the Council of Europe, on behalf of the European Center for Not-for-Profit Law.

CAI held its inaugural meeting on 4 April. It will host the negotiations on a new legal framework on the development, design, and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems.

The new committee will build on the work of its predecessor, the Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence (CAHAI), operating in 2019-2021.

Ahead of the inaugural meeting, civil society organizations AlgorithmWatch, Access Now, Center for AI and Digital Policy (CAIDP), Conference of International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) of the Council of Europe and Global Partners Digital issued a joint statement saying,

We will seize the opportunity our participation and contribution offer and work towards a legal instrument on the development, design, and application of AI that truly protects people’s most fundamental rights, adheres to democracy and the common good, and upholds the rule of law.”

Francesca Fanucci said that together with her colleagues on the new committee, they would strive to ensure meaningful participation in AI governance.
