Roxana Radu Contributes to Paris Peace Forum Report on AI and the Global South

April 1, 2022

CMDS Fellow Roxana Radu has contributed to a new report by the Paris Peace Forum and Initiate: Digital Rights in Society on artificial intelligence governance and the Global South.

The Global South countries are major sources of data and raw materials for AI systems, but they remain dependent on the US and China for Ai infrastructure and services.

The action-oriented report proposes four key actions to reverse the increasing fragmentation in the governance of algorithmic platforms and AI-powered systems worldwide. These are: sustaining a global discussion of digital rights concerns and standards in AI policy that prioritizes the Global South; building a global database of proposed and implemented AI legislation, focusing especially on the Global South; implementing the requirement of AI impact assessment reports in Global South countries; and creating incentives to retain young AI scientists and engineers in the Global South.
