“This is not a new situation, unfortunately, and yet we see once again that tech companies are winging it,” our Fellow Courtney Radsch said about online disinformation in the Russia-Ukraine war in an interview on Marketplace, a radio program on American Public Media.
She said Russia’s “all-out information offensive” is “blanketing” social media with propaganda and disinformation. Casual users cannot be expected to fact-check every piece of information; yet tech companies are creating content moderation policies “on the fly yet again as they face the fact that … social media platforms are integral to how war is conducted,” she said. She also criticized tech companies for not having a policy in place for a potential non-democratic regime change.
