Abstract:

More than a year passed since the last Iranian presidential election, in which Mahmoud Ahmadinejad controversially regained power. Many Iranians who were campaigning against Ahmadinejad for months did not believe in the accuracy of the results. An unprecedented number of people decided to take to the streets of Iran and claim for justice, forming the Iranian Green Movement, asking peacefully for Ahmadinejad's resignation. The government's response was straightforward: massive violence.

Ali Abdi is a current student at CEU, Department of Gender Studies, and has been a human rights activist in Iran. Being present in the post–election protests, Ali will give an account of what actually happened in his country last year. Focusing on what today is globally known as citizen journalism and referring to his personal experiences, Ali is going to present photos and videos courageously taken by ordinary Iranian citizens during the protests. These materials have been uploaded to the on–line social networks by the people themselves, who put their lives and freedom at risk in order to inform the world about the brutality of a government. Drawing on Iranian citizen journalists' footage, Ali will approach this social movement from multiple perspectives, giving insight about diverse kinds of peaceful activism advocated by Iranian dissidents, effective Internet campaigns launched all throughout last year, and today's shape and efficacy of the Green Movement.
