Facilitating Group Discussions: From the Seminar Room to the Lecture Hall
Instructor: Ian Cook
This seminar explores leading research and exemplary practices regarding how scholars can facilitate inquiry-based, student-centered discussions at the core of university teaching. It addresses questions about what constitutes a good discussion in various academic fields and how discussion leaders can structure discussions to promote complex questioning and deep understanding. It addresses discussion as a fundamental element in all teaching, including large-group teaching through interactive lecturing and small-group discussions in class. Doctoral students in the seminar develop discussion strategies appropriate to their academic disciplines and receive critical feedback from the instructor and the members of the seminar.
